Haunted People Syndrome

Haunted People Syndrome (HPS) is a concept proposed in parapsychology and anomalistic psychology to describe a pattern of psychological and environmental experiences reported by individuals who believe they are chronically affected by supernatural or paranormal phenomena. Rather than a single event or location being haunted, the person themselves seems to be the focus of ongoing paranormal experiences.

Key Characteristics of Haunted People Syndrome:

  • Recurrent Experiences: Individuals often report long-term or repeated paranormal encounters (e.g., seeing apparitions, hearing voices, objects moving, strange sensations).
  • Personal Focus: The phenomena seem to follow the individual, not tied to a specific place. It may occur in multiple locations where the person lives or visits.
  • Emotional and Psychological Distress: People with HPS often experience anxiety, sleep disturbances, and trauma-like symptoms related to the events.
  • Interpretation Framework: The person typically interprets these experiences through a paranormal lens, often reinforced by cultural, religious, or social beliefs.
  • Social Isolation or Validation: Some individuals become isolated due to disbelief from others, while others may find a community that reinforces the haunting belief.
